Norfolk Jacket and knickerbockers

Here we show a sporting attire with a Norfolk Jacket and knickerbockers. In the last two decades of the 19th century a more countrified attire consisting of a Norfolk jacket and knickerbockers become popular. The suit, with a jacket instead of a tailcoat, was introduced in the 1850s for informal occasions. The Norfolk jacket is popular for shooting and rugged outdoor pursuits. It is made of sturdy tweed or similar fabric and features paired box pleats over the chest and back and a fabric belt. The knickerbockers are knee length trousers. The term knickerbocker is derived from the name Diedrich Knickerbocker, invented by Washington Irving for a comic history of New York that he wrote in 1889; the book is illustrated with sketches of Dutch immigrants wearing this kind of trousers which are actually worn by men since the 18th century. At the end of the 19th century knickerbockers are also adopted by women who start to play sports.
